Diamond Facts

Tell Me More, Tell Me More!

Diamonds. Nothing is harder, nothing is sparklier and nothing -thanks to a nifty, mid-20th century advertising campaign - symbolizes love better. The ancient Greeks had a wordfor it, adamas - "invincible."

Gemstone Facts

Who Am I?

Can you guess what gemstone this is?

The Mayans called me "the stone of the bird of paradise." Others have called me girasol, again a reference to my flaming reds and day-glo orange, while Mexico knows me as it's national stone. At my most brilliant - and valuable - I display an almost unrivaled play of dusky color, and am alone among my family in being regularly faceted  although it is as a cabochon that I feel most worthy, often shining as the center stone in a pendant.

I am the fire opal!

Wedding Season

Wedding Dress of the Week

Ann Shoket, Seventeen, editor-in-chief
"We organized our whole ceremony around the view from the Soho Mondrian Hotel's roofdeck! It was an unusually warm October night, so we rearranged plans to move the party outside. We caught this perfect sunset right after saying our vows. The dress is Pamella Roland, bought off the rack at Saks. We picked a wedding date last-minute to accomodate my husband's Australian family, so I didn't have time to agonize. I wanted more evening gown than wedding dress; a big to-do just isn't my style. I tried it on in silver lame (!) and had it made in ivory chiffon. I didn't see the finished product until the night before the wedding! It came out perfectly."

Wedding Season

Wedding Dress of the Week

Cindi Leive, Glamour, editor-in-chief
"Our wedding definitely wasn't a capital-W wedding. It was a big cocktail party in a loft on West Street, and in the middle of it, someone clinked on a glass, everyone gathered 'round, and the rabbi did the service. I actually don't even remember putting on makeup! But it was perfect for us. We ended the night be taking over New York Noodletown in Chinatown at midnight with our friends. We go back there every year with our kids and manager tells them the story of our wedding."

Jamie Rosen, Town & Country, beauty director
"We told our band not to stop the music for the cake cutting, so it ended up being a semi-private moment in the midst of a big party."

Wedding Season

Wedding Dress of the Week

It's June and the season of weddings! Take a peek at the country's top fashion editors and their stylish weddings.

Joanna Hillman, Harper's Bazaar, style director
"Marco Zanini of Rochas and my editor-in-chief, Glenda Bailey, were my wedding fairy godmothers! They joined forces to ensure I got the dress of my dreams from Rochas's archive. It was out of a movie when the box arrived at my desk with a heartfelt note from Marco (less than a month before the big day!). I tried it on right away in our fashion closet. I knew it was 'the one' before I looked in the mirror."

Gemstone Facts: Aquamarine

Tell Me More, Tell Me More!

"Aquamarine- the sea in rock form. Most older Americans remember only lightly saturated aqua or the more common synthetic spinel substitute offered by stores through the 20th century. But in the last 10 years we have been blessed with new finds in places such as Madagascar, which has produced stunning, saturated aqua and the unheated, more natural sea-foam color that all the leading edge jewelers are now seeking." -Jim Fiebig, via InStore Magazine

"This is probably the all-time gold standard of red carpet [fashion]. It's by the legendary costume designer Edith Head. In the heyday of Hollywood, the studio's costume designer would also design the star's wardrobe for the press tour. Only Grace Kelly could get away with this pale blue without it looking [like a] bridesmaid."

"I always say that a black dress is just a black dress when it's photographed. It might look like a million bucks in real life, but in a photograph it can become rather blah. These Lorraine Schwartz earrings are just heaven and carry the whole look."

"What a sweet dress, and how very Hepburn. I love the graphicness of the hair with the cat-eye, and the lack of jewelry. It can so easily ruin a look."-Annabel Tollman

Life's Tid-Bits

15 Ways to Become Happier!

"Here is a list of 15 things which, if you give up on them, will make your life a lot easier and much, much happier. We hold on to so many things that cause us a great deal of pain, stress and suffering -- and instead of letting them all go, instead of allowing ourselves to be stress free and happy -- we cling to them. Not anymore. Starting today we will give up on all those things that no longer serve us, and we will embrace change. Ready? Here we go:

1. Give up your need to always be right.
"Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind?" -Wayne Dyer

2. Give up your need for control.
"By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try... The world is beyond winning." -Lao Tzu

3. Give up on blame.

4. Give up your self-defeating self-talk.
"The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive." -Eckhart Tolle

5. Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do, about what is possible not impossible.
"A belief is not an idea held by the mind, it is an idea that holds the mind." -Elly Roselle

6. Give up complaining.

7. Give up the luxury of criticism

8. Give up your need to impress others.

9. Give up your resistance to change.
"Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls." -Joseph Campbell

10. Give up labels.
"The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don't know anything about." -Wayne Dyer

11. Give up on your fears.
"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself." -Franklin D. Roosevelt

12. Give up your excuses.

13. Give up the past.

14. Give up attachment

15. Give up living your life to other people's expectations."
