Life's Tid-Bits

15 Ways to Become Happier!

"Here is a list of 15 things which, if you give up on them, will make your life a lot easier and much, much happier. We hold on to so many things that cause us a great deal of pain, stress and suffering -- and instead of letting them all go, instead of allowing ourselves to be stress free and happy -- we cling to them. Not anymore. Starting today we will give up on all those things that no longer serve us, and we will embrace change. Ready? Here we go:

1. Give up your need to always be right.
"Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind?" -Wayne Dyer

2. Give up your need for control.
"By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try... The world is beyond winning." -Lao Tzu

3. Give up on blame.

4. Give up your self-defeating self-talk.
"The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive." -Eckhart Tolle

5. Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do, about what is possible not impossible.
"A belief is not an idea held by the mind, it is an idea that holds the mind." -Elly Roselle

6. Give up complaining.

7. Give up the luxury of criticism

8. Give up your need to impress others.

9. Give up your resistance to change.
"Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls." -Joseph Campbell

10. Give up labels.
"The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don't know anything about." -Wayne Dyer

11. Give up on your fears.
"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself." -Franklin D. Roosevelt

12. Give up your excuses.

13. Give up the past.

14. Give up attachment

15. Give up living your life to other people's expectations."

1500-Year Old Ring May Have Royal Roots

"The $50,000 the Yorkshire Museum paid for a sapphire, gold and glass ring is turning out to be money well spent. Found by a local man with metal detector near the village of Esrick in 2009, the ring may have been made for the King of France, 1,500 years ago. "This sapphire ring is even more special than we had previously thought," says museum curator Natalie McCaul. A conference of global experts earlier this year made a few conclusions about the piece: The sapphire was probably cut during the Roman Era and the ring desgined around it. The wear on the rings suggests that it was worn for at least 50 years before it was lost. "Nothing like it has been found in this country," claims an exuberant McCaul."

Gemstone Facts

All About Emeralds with GIA

Pantone has named emerald their color of the year, which makes us jewelers even more excited to celebrate with the emerald stone all year long! The Gemological Institute of America tells us a bit more about the famous green gemstone. Take a peek!

"The first known emerald mines were in Egypt, dating from at least 330 B.C. into the 1700s. Cleopatra was known to have a passion for emerald, and used it in her royal adornments. 16th-century Conquistadors discovered South American mines hidden by the Incas. A ready and exceptional supply of emeralds was suddenly available, and Europeans fell in love with the bewitchingly beautiful gemstone.

Some 500 years later, emeralds are still enchanting us. Emerald is the birthstone for the month of MAy because its color symbolizes the rebirth and renewal that comes with spring. Pantone names it the Color of the Year for 2013 because of the "luxury and elegance (it brings) to the palette."

Emerald available for custom design at Measetique Jewels
Custom Emerald and Diamond Pendant

Emeralds are formed when the chromium, vanadium, and iron are present in the mineral beryl. The varying presence of these three elements gives emerald its range of color. Chromium and vanadium make an intense green color. Iron gives the stone a bluish tint.

The most valuable emeralds are bluish-green to green and have a medium to medium-dark tone. Since emeralds typically form in six-sided prisms, they are naturally suited for, and often shaped into, the emerald cut.

Most emeralds have inclusions (internal clarity characteristics) and blemishes (surface clarity characteristics) that can be seen with the unaided eye. The size and types of inclusions greatly affect price: from $10 per carat for a small low-quality stone, to $50,000 per carat for an exceptionally clean stone."

Jewelry Facts: Platinum

All About Platinum with GIA
Take a moment to learn a bit more about platinum with The Gemological Institute if America. You might be surprised with what you learn about this popular material.

"Jewelers often select platinum for heirloom pieces because it is extremely durable, doesn't tarnish, is malleable, and has heft (weight). The qualities mean that platinum can be turned into delicate shapes that stand untouched against the ravages of time.
The Hope Diamond is set in Platinum

Despite these attractive platinum traveled a rocky road before it reached its present popularity.

Ancient Egyptians used platinum in jewelry and sarcophagi, but the metal virtually vanished from use until the early 1900s. Platinum wasn't used partially because of the challenges of working with it: it has to be heated to 3,827 degrees Fahrenheit - a temperature that was beyond the reach of medieval Europeans. Liquid platinum also hardens in a few seconds, so using it for casting was virtually impossible with early era technology.

Advances in technology in the 18th and 19th centuries enabled metalsmiths to generate the heat needed to melt platinum. In 1884, Peter Carl Faberge started using it to make his famous Easter Eggs, and a few decades later Louis Cartier began to make creations that adorned kinds and maharajahs.

Platinum disappeared a second time from jewelry during World War II - it was declared a strategic metal that was needed for the war effort - but it quickly regained its luster once the war ended. It was once again associated with style, elegance, and wealth."

Jewelry News: Diamonds

Diamonds Setting World Records

The Mouawad Group has set a Guinness World Record for the most valuable necklace, Guinness confirmed to National Jeweler on Friday (March 2013).

Mouawad's L'Incomparable diamond necklace is 18-karat gold with 637 carats of diamonds and is valued at $55 million, making it the most valuable--not expensive, Guinness said--necklace existing today.

THe piece features the 407.48 carat natural fancy-deep yellow "Incomparable" diamond, first made public in 1984. It is the largest flawless or internally flawless diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America, GIA Director of Public Relations Stephen Morisseau said.

In addition the necklace has 35 round diamonds, 27 pear-shaped diamonds, nine heart-shaped diamonds, five emerald-cut diamonds, five cushion-cut diamonds, four oval-shaped diamonds, three Asscher-cut diamonds and two radiants.

The necklace set the Guinness World record on January 19. The necklace was unveiled atthe Doha Jewellery and Watch Exhibition, which too place February 25 to March 3 in the Middle Eastern state of Qatar.

Jewelry and Technology Join Forces

The Google Password Ring

Tech giant Google is developing a data-encrypted ring that may eventually replace passwords as a new, innovative and hacker-resistant way for users to access their email, and other online accounts.

Amid an ever-present string of hacks and identity thefts related to easy-to-steal typed passwords, Google has been working on building the wearable tech ring, which could be used to log in to a computer or online account.

The ring is also viewed as a fashionable solution to an array of other problems related to traditionally typed passwords, including forgetfulness while keeping track of dozens of passwords to carry out simple web tasks like checking email or bank statements.

The device was first outlined in a January research paper written by Eric Grosse a Google security executive and Mayank Upadhyay, an engineer for the company.

"Along with many in the industry, we feel passwords and simple bearer tokens such as cookies are no longer sufficient to keep users safe," Grosse and Upadhyay wrote.

We'd like your smartphone or smart-card embedded finger ring to authorize a new computer via a tap on the computer, even in situations in which your phone might be without cellular connectivity," they added.

The accessory, which is reportedly under testing, resembles a small credential-equipped USB key that users could plug into a computer to access their personal accounts and files.

Only instead of having it hang from a keychain or sit in the bottom of a backpack, it would be worn on the ring finger.

Google, which has, in recent months, disclosed plans to get into the eyeglasses and shoes businesses, has suggested that the device works by sending a cryptographic message to prove the ring's validity when it's plugged into a computer.

The ring itself, does not contain a password and never actually sends any information. It simply proves its validity by correctly answering a mathematical equation posed by the online service its trying to access.

The company hasn't offered any aesthetic details about the prototype ring, and in a statement, a Google representative would acknowledge only that the company was working on improving the user authentication process in general. "We're focused on making authentication more secure, and yet easier to manage," the spokesman said. "We believe that ideas like USB tokens or other hardware-based systems have the potential to make login systems better."

But as a security conference, Upadhyay suggested that familiarity with a key-for-access device could a go a long way toward the ring ultimately catching on.

"Everyone is familiar with an ATM," he said "So what if you could use the same experience with a computer."

Diamonds - What Do They Mean?

The Origin of the Word is Revealed

In the film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, time and time again the father points out the fact that all words come from Greek origins. In the case of the diamond, it's true.

Diamond comes from the Greek word adamas, which translates to unbreakable.

Engagement rings are often set with a diamond, signifying and unbreakable bond between the couple.

Diamonds and Cancer Treatment

Diamonds Show Promise as Cancer Treatment

UCLA doctors are touting a new treatment for one of the most virulent and difficult to treat forms of breast cancer -- injecting patients with tiny diamond particles that bind together and serve as a dispersal agent for chemotherapy drugs. Tested so far in mice, the diamond mass somehow reduces the toxicity of chemical agents used to treat "triple negative" breast cancer. Said one researcher: "The agent we've developed reduces the toxic side effects that are associated with treatment and mediates significant reductions in tumor size."

Diamonds are Forever

A Brief History of Diamonds

With April on it's way we are ready to sparkle for all of our April birthdays! How many of you are lucky enough to have diamond as your birthstone? Take a peek at a bit of history as to why April's birthstone is among the most sought after stone.

"The path by which diamonds became perceived as an investment is traced in a magazine article that notes the Greek origin of the stone's name -- "adamo," meaning "overcome." Diamonds first srarted appearing as ornamentation in the Middle Ages, despite efforts by French King Louis IX to restrict ownership to royalty. The discovery of large diamond deposits in South Africa in the 1870s gave diamonds mass-market accessibility. The spike in commodity prices over the past decade has investors looking more and more at gemstones, especially diamonds, especially pink ones."

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

The Claddagh Ring

Love, loyalty and friendship are all symbolized in the Claddagh ring. It's quite the appropriate ring for the month (since it's Irish!) and for anyone. The symbols represented in the ring each stand for something found in both love and friendship relationships.

The Crown that sits atop the ring design stands for loyalty.
The Heart which is held by hands stands for love.
The Hands which support the heart in the setting stand for friendship.

These key traits are found in most all of the special relationships you have in life; whether it be with a friend, family, loved one, fiance, wife.

With these rings often times being passed from generation to generation it's special to have them custom designed. We suggest including a birthstone in the setting, an emerald would be particularly beautiful!

Engagement Rings: What's New

Ring designed by Marty Mease, Measetique Jewels
Yellow diamond, surrounded by white diamonds on a yellow gold band

As a jeweler it's always exciting to see the newest trends in wedding jewelry. This year L.A.'s wedding experts reported the top styles they are seeing and it sounds like a breath of fresh air for the Midwest! The vintage inspired looks are on their way out the door and being replaced with timeless solitaires and yellow golds. One LA jeweler, Nelson Holdo, remarked, "Also, for the first time in I don't know how long, we've seen yellow gold. For the longest time platinum was the thing. Yellow diamonds are the most accessible colored diamond, so they are gaining popularity too." With the rise in colored diamonds in engagement rings we will also see a rise in gemstones used in engagement rings. Be sure to work with a gemologist (Marty is a great one!) if you decide on the colored gemstone route. Not all gemstones are as solid and 'tough' as diamonds for withstanding everyday wear.

Elizabeth Taylor's Jewelry Box

Diamonds and Emeralds!

Was Julianne Moore just getting in the spirit of Saint Patrick's day with the necklace she chose to wear? Nope, she was lucky enough to borrow the piece on loan from Bulgari, who created the piece for actress Elizabeth Taylor. Read more about the private event below!

It’s common for a star like Julianne Moore to spend an evening in borrowed jewels, but Tuesday saw the actress don dramatic pieces from the private collection of none other than Elizabeth Taylor.
Luxury jeweler Bulgari has acquired eight of its own creations back from the estate of the late actress, and marked the occasion with a seated dinner and afterparty at its Beverly Hills flagship.
Two armed guards tailed Moore while she was in possession of the goods – an insane step-cut emerald brooch from Taylor’s engagement setting (given to her by Richard Burton) with a necklace to match.
Moore rocked the brooch, described by one partygoer as "worth millions," surrounded in 12 pearl-shaped diamonds. The piece attached to the necklace by hook.
“It’s like getting two for the price of one,” Taylor was quoted as saying when she received it in 1964, according to Bulgari.
Other ladies enjoying the merchandise were Drew BarrymoreKate Walsh, and Kirsten Dunst, who was sans beau Garrett Hedlund but enjoying a date night with her mom.
An Italian garden theme was in place – a nod to the Rome set of “Cleopatra” where Taylor and Burton fell in love – and featured ornate shrubs, columns, and lacquered outdoor dining furniture.
Thankfully the scene wasn’t actually al fresco since it was pouring rain in Beverly Hills. The Bulgari team had a first class solution, however.
Dozens of valets with umbrellas escorted guests to the storefront then across the street, where dinner was staged atop a parking garage.

Engagement Rings

A Quarter Saved

We were inspired by this young man's decision to save for his future. At the young age of 14, Sean Clayton began saving for an engagement ring. Read his fun story below! I think it teaches us all the value of a quarter saved and the future it can bring.

"Sure, engagement rings can be expensive, but a very practical teenager recently took to Reddit to share his unusual (but kind of brilliant) plan for paying for his future engagement ring.
Reddit user Imriayalde posed the question, "What's the silliest thing you've done to save money on your wedding?" to the Reddit community Tuesday. In response, Sean Clayton (Reddit username SeanAir) explained that when he was 14, he decided to save every quarter he got and use that money to offset the cost of an engagement ring. He's now 19, not engaged or married, and still saving.
"Pretty much been taxing myself for 5 years. Hope it pays off," he wrote. "My friends have been calling me crazy for years."
Clayton, who lives in Snellville, Georgia, told HuffPost Weddings that he began thinking about his future at young age, and was inspired to save money after listening to a radio program in which a woman was encouraged to save dollar bills and put them towards an important future purchase. Since he was only 14 and not earning any money, he decided to save quarters instead.
"I figured that the only guaranteed, big-time spending I would likely conduct in the next 15 years would be at the beginning of a marriage," Clayton said. "I decided from that point that I would save those quarters over a long period of time in the hope that I would avoid a serious financial strain as I enter into marriage, an even greater financial commitment."
Clayton estimated that he has saved about 15 pounds worth of quarters so far. Another Redditor, Kalypso_, wrote that at 80 quarters to the pound, Clayton has probably saved about $300.
"That is actually kind of adorable. I mean, please don't feel like you have to buy an expensive ring (not all girls are into that, believe it or not), but it's very responsible to set money aside for big purchases you anticipate in the future. I hope your lucky girl realizes that when the time comes," Redditor keakealani commented."

Celebrity Engagement Rings

Jennifer Aniston &Justin Theroux

The worth of Aniston’s ring, presented by actor Justin Theroux, has been put in the same range, though it’s been tough to call because Aniston wasn’t quick to show it off (she even kept it covered on the set of We Are The Millers in New Mexico). It wasn’t until two months post-engagement that the paparazzi finally got a shot of the stunner as Aniston caressed her boyfriend’s face. The diamond—which might be emerald cut, might be oval or radiant—looks to be about eight or nine carats, which is certainly larger than Jolie’s. But with both rings being priced in the same ballpark, which bedazzled bride-to-be came out ahead is a matter of preference.

Swarovski Running Shoes

Now these are some running shoes we can really get behind.

Normally the ladies at Measetique Jewels prefer high heels, occasionally the cute and well-styled ballet flat. But after reading the below article from InStore Magazine, we find ourselves coveting this pair of running shoes! (For us US readers, football = soccer!)

"Swarovski has demonstrated in the past their willingness to cover virtually anything with crystals - from the interior of a Lamborghini to Susan Boyle's toenails - in order to get a media hit. Their latest PR stunt is leather Nikes embedded with 4,000 crystals. The company believes that the shoes are the most expensive pair of football boots ever used in action. "Action" here means a pre-match warm-up and photo-op during which they were worn by a French footballer who ditched them for real shoes once the game began."

Celebrity Engagement Rings

Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

Even though they’ve both moved on, exes Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston will never be far apart in the headlines. They both got engaged in 2012—Brad in April, and Jen in August—and inevitably, the betrothal rocks were the subject of comparison. If you’re counting carats, Brad’s seven-year partner, Angelina Jolie, has 16—one seven-carat, emerald-cut center stone, and nine carats worth of tapered diamonds covering the platinum band. The ring, designed by Beverly Hills jeweler Robert Procop, has been estimated at half a million, though reports say that Pitt paid twice that.

All That Glitters at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards

"Pioneered by Joan Rivers just after the Civil War, the age-old “Who are you wearing?” has been supplanted on awards-show red carpets by the more 21st Century “How much are you wearing?” Recording star and domestic-abuse victim Rihanna flashed a $2 million, 100-carat diamond and platinum serpentine bracelet from Neil Lane at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, which was also the first day of the Chinese Year of the Snake. (Nicole Kidman acknowledged the occasion with Fred Leighton's 19th Century green enamel, diamond and gold snake cuff, no price mentioned because Nicole’s a classy dame.) Never shy about, well, anything, Jennifer Lopez turned up at the Grammy’s sporting $5 million in Norman Silverman rocks, including a 33-carat canary diamond ring. Fortunately, no one asked JLo about her jewelry at the Golden Globes last month, when she wore a diamond and rhodium pendant in the form of a Hershey’s Kiss, $2,620 at Sears (!). As the world now knows, however, country star (and reality show winner) Carrie Underwood placed far ahead in this particular horserace with her record-breaking $31 million diamond necklace (381 carats) by Johnathan Arndt (yes, that’s how he spells his name), who designed fellow American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s engagement ring (a paltry $200,000)."

Top Valentine's Day Movies

Romantic Movies to Watch with your Valentine

Looking for the perfect night in before the Valentine's Day festivities? With all of the cold weather we have been having its the perfect time to snuggle up on the couch and enjoy a romantic movie, and yes, it's that time of the year when it's OK for the guys to watch these without complaining.... after all, the Super Bowl is over. And ok, maybe a few of these might be better to watch during a girl's night (Crazy, Stupid, Love, any movie with Ryan Gosling is best for girl's night)!

1. I Hate Valentine's Day- Does she really hate Valentine's Day? You'll have to see in this indie film staring the lead actors from My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

2. When Harry Met Sally- Before we had The Notebook, we had When Harry Met Sally, a classic love story.

3. Crazy, Stupid, Love- Like I said, this might be better suited for a girls night, but the guys can appreciate the great lengths the characters go through to go on a date, and everyone can enjoy Steve Carell's humor.

4. An Affair to Remember- Must have a classic Cary Grant movie such as this on the list!

5. The Notebook- Mandatory on any romantic movie list, men, take note of Noah's chivalry.

6. Love, Actually- People think it's just a Christmas movie, but like the film says "love, actually is all around", and that is very important to remember no matter what time of the year it is.

7. Somewhere in Time- I might be biased since the lead character's name is Elise, but it's a love story with time travel so it definitely makes the list.

8. Return to Me- Quirky and fun, plus a great soundtrack for the Rat Pack fans.

9. French Kiss- Ah, Paris, the City of Love

10. The Princess Bride- There are sword fights and ROUSes, need we say more?

Celebrity Engagement Rings

Hugh Hefner & Crystal Harris

If at first you don’t succeed, try again and keep both rings. That’s the way Crystal Harris, new wife of Playboy icon Hugh Hefner, played it. Hefner first proposed to her on Christmas Eve 2010 with a 3-carat round diamond set in platinum; the couple set a June date, but the 24-year-old bride bailed five days before the big event. A year and a half later, the tenacious octogenarian tried again, presenting Harris with another impressive diamond set in six prongs with a diamond-covered band. “My beautiful ring from Hugh Hefner,” Harris tweeted—with photos. This ring did the trick; the couple exchanged vows, as planned, on New Year’s Eve. We hope Harris likes the rings: an ironclad prenup says she’ll get none of Hef’s estimated $43 million fortune.

Amethyst: The February Birthstone

We found a quick summary of the Greek mythology behind the naming of the Amethyst stone. The stone happens to be the birthstone for those born in February. Enjoy!

"The name amethyst comes from the Greek amythestos for "not drunk" and the story of one of the goddess Diana's proteges, who was turned into a solid piece of quartz until Dionysus spilled his wine on her, turning her purple. The myth lived on in the practice of carving chalices from amethyst, to make water appear to be wine and hence protect the drinker from drunkenness."

Celebrity Engagement Rings

Deadmau5 & Kat Von D

Canadian DJ and music producer Deadmau5 (aka Joel Zimmerman) may have spared 61 characters when he tweeted his impromptu proposal to tattoo artist Kat Von D, but he spared no creative inspiration in designing her one-of-a-kind ring. Unfortunately, the unplanned proposal—which was supposed to have occurred 10 days later on Christmas, completed ring in hand—meant that his surprised girlfriend got a jpeg instead of a jewel.

The Twitpic featured a ring with a white diamond flanked by two skulls, and was accompanied by a note: “Changing the diamond to a black diamond. FYI. Sorry for the jpg… they’ll finish the actual ring soon I hope. I love you :D” The final product was well worth the wait, changed as it was to a double-band design with four skulls and small black accent diamonds. The tweeted response from the overwhelmed bride-to-be: “Tonight, Joel put a ring on my finger—too taken aback by its beauty and its meaning to post a pic right now.”
